The 2012 BMW X3 has come a long way since the model’s inception in 2003. This “soft-roader” has become the luxury standard when it comes to family wagons. It combines the off-road performance and horsepower of sport utility vehicles with the size and fuel efficiency of station wagons. Known for its smooth, sure-footed luxury ride over even the toughest road terrain, the 2011 X3 was offered at a base MSRP of $39,000. The 2012 base model should run in the same price range.Improvements
The new 2012 X3 compact SUV is designed to focus more on utility than previous years’ models. In addition to the improved xDrive all wheel drive system and the solid build quality, the handling has been retooled. Rain or shine, on hairpin turns or stop-and-go traffic, test drives indicate that the 2012 X3 has worked out all the handling kinks that many drivers experienced in the 2011 models. The formerly stiff ride of the X3 made it difficult for long cross-country trips, but this new model should work out fine for any family road trips you might want to take.
Exterior Style
To be released in the spring of 2011, the 2012 X3 will be shown for the first time in the U.S. at this December’s Los Angeles Auto Show. With improved roominess and stretched wheelbase dimensions, the new X3 models have more of an off-road feel, ideal for large families or people who tow a lot of stuff. Tougher exterior styling shows off the bigger, sportier feel of the 2012 BMW X3 models.
Performance
The base model’s horsepower increases from 260 hp to 300 hp. Despite the improved power of the 2012 model, the vehicle is expected to weigh slightly less than the 2011 model due to rigid cast aluminum replacing steel sheets on rear and front axle assemblies. While BMW is showing interest in hybrid and diesel versions for its high-end luxury models, the X3 is still only available with a standard gasoline engine.
Safety Features
Regarding safety features, the 2012 X3 models will utilize the best that luxury compact SUVs have to offer. Standard models will contain front, side and head airbag for driver and passenger, four-wheel anti lock brakes, dynamic traction control and hill descent speed control. Optional features such as electronic adaptive suspension and Dynamic Performance Control are must-haves for anyone planning on taking this out for rougher spins.
